Initially a Viking fishing village identified as “Havn,” in the tenth century the city of Copenhagen was officially founded and served as a harbor town. In the fifteenth century it was named the capital of Denmark and the residence of the royal family members. It was often sacked throughout the Protestant Reformation, and was besieged through the wars with Sweden in the late 1650s. In the early nineteenth century the city was bombarded by the British.
